The first event started off slowly. I went to Atlantic Center in the morning. It was a cold day, everyone was bundled up, on their way to work. One woman said hi, but she did not need a free ride. I then decided to go home and rethink the process.

The first event started off slowly. I went to Atlantic Center in the morning. It was a cold day, everyone was bundled up, on their way to work. One woman said hi, but she did not need a free ride. I then decided to go home and rethink the process.

I decided a sign was in order. At around 6 PM, I took my sign and made a trip to Union Square in Manhattan. With my sign, I camped underneath the Whole Foods and held up my sign next to the turnstile.

The first woman that approached me told me that my sign was clever and held out a dollar.  She explained that she could not swipe me in, because she had a monthly. To which I commented that I was not asking for a free ride, but offering them. She looked puzzled, withdrew the dollar, and swiped herself in.

Soon after that, people started to look at the sign and chit-chat to their friends. When the first person came up and said hi, it opened a flood gate. Others saw that it was not a hoax and would come up and hesitantly say hi. Then it grew, until I realized that you can only swipe with a card four times every twenty minutes. I had $12 on my card, but could not swipe people in.

I went to buy $8 tickets, but there was a long line at the machines, because two of them were out of order and only one was functional. I did not want to hold up the machines buying 11 $8 cards, so I would buy one at a time and then let people through. This was causing me to say sorry to people if they were the 5th in row to say hi, so I ran across the street and used other machines and printed 10 more cards all at once. When I returned, I was ready.

This time, I held up the sign and a guy enters across the room, sees my sign, and yells, “Hi! Can I have a free ride?” I swiped for him and he went on his way. People would come in waves and it always took that initial person to just come say hi and then others would do the same.

At some point, the 3rd machine giving out cards was inoperable as some MTA workers came to do something to it. I was standing there with my sign and I had three MTA workers looking at me funny. Some woman went to buy a card and was saddened when she saw that none were working. One of the MTA workers told her to turn around and say hi to me. She looked at him funny, then looked at me and gave me a weird look. He told her that if she said hi to me, that I would swipe her in. Eventually she came and said hi, so I swiped her in.

When I was down to my last swipe, I had a couple walk up to me and say hi. I explained that I only had one left. The guy said that is okay and that his girlfriend could have the swipe, because it was her birthday. “Hi!” “Hi! Happy birthday! Have a good night!” Swiped her in and then swiped myself in and was done.

I thought I was done at least. Turns out when I exited my station ready to walk home, a woman asked me if I could swipe in her son. How could I say no, when I had just given out 55 free rides to random people. I swiped him in and walked home.

$118 were spent and 56 free rides were given out. I think a few extra people said hi.

There are a few things that I would like to do for the next event. Have someone take pictures or video. Have cards to hand out to people wondering what is going on that directs them to this website. Maybe have a person with a donation bucket, so people can donate to the next event if they are feeling awesome.

All in all, a lot of people had fun and laughed and said hi.
